Support from BSTC Brings Affordable Learning Fun to Local Children This Summer
In a heartwarming initiative to promote educational enrichment and community well-being, Bude-Stratton Town Council (BSTC) approved funding for Cognition Learning so they could offer subsidised STEAM workshops for local children during the school summer holidays. The agreement to help fund the project, which received unanimous support from BSTC councillors in July, aims to provide engaging learning experiences that blend education and fun.
The support from BSTC Council has enabled Cognition Learning to extend an exciting opportunity to local children. By subsidising the workshop costs, Cognition is able to offer children a workshop place for just £24, significantly lower than the standard price of £39. Furthermore, the programme includes three fully subsidised places per day, complete with lunch, for children who are recipients of free school meals during term times.
The workshops, which span six hours and take place at the Parkhouse Centre, are tailored for children aged 5 to 11. The curriculum combines elements of science exploration, LEGO robotics, programming, dance, outdoor games, and dedicated relaxation spaces. This holistic approach ensures that children not only learn, but also thrive in an environment that encourages creativity and exploration.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Philippa Purchase expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative after attending one of the Cognition sessions. She remarked, “Witnessing the children engrossed in a dance session with Lisa Wood and Briony Cole from the Cognition team was truly heartwarming. From scientific experiments to a fun chocolate dance, it’s evident that this programme is nurturing both minds and spirits.”
Councillor Purchase further emphasised the profound impact of the initiative, stating, “I’m immensely pleased that councillors rallied behind this initiative. Feedback from parents underscores the significance of offering affordable, enriching experiences. Families have expressed their gratitude for the BSTC subsidy, sharing that it has not only empowered their children but has also enabled them to work during the summer.”
The relationship between BSTC and Cognition Learning is fostering a vibrant summer for the community. Councillor Purchase went on to say “Children are immersing themselves in fun-packed learning experiences at the Parkhouse Centre, setting the stage for lifelong memories and growth. This initiative exemplifies the power of partnerships in creating positive change, benefitting children, parents, and the local economy alike.”
