Bude and Stratton Marks VE Day 80

Bude-Stratton Town Council hosted a day of reflection, remembrance, and community spirit to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

The commemorations began with a thanksgiving and remembrance service led by Reverend David Saunders. The service was attended by Fiona Hargreaves, Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, alongside local residents and guests, including veterans and serving members of the armed forces.

Mayor Steve Haynes took part in his final official engagement as Mayor of Bude-Stratton Town Council, laying a wreath in tribute to those who served. The service included a moving rendition of the Last Post, played by bugler Emma Inch.

The day continued with a range of activities and contributions from local groups and organisations. Bude-Stratton Old Cornwall Society hosted a wartime display, while Bude Choral Society performed a selection of wartime classics. Food and craft stalls, including a roaring trade in fish and chips from Kernow Chippy, helped create a lively and welcoming atmosphere in the town.

The commemorations concluded with a poignant moment as Storm Tower was lit up by Westcountry Event Services, providing a visually striking and fitting end to the day.
