Bude Canal Embankment Strengthening Works Completed
Cornwall Council and Cormac have successfully completed strengthening works on the Bude Canal embankment as of the end of March 2025. These essential repairs were carried out following the discovery of leaks on the seaward canal wall, which were identified as fresh water seeping from the canal. Further investigation revealed voids within the inner embankment structure, necessitating remedial action to stabilise the area.
To address this issue, over 100 cubic metres of specialist grout was injected into the embankment structure to fill the voids. Additionally, clearance of vegetation from the sea walls was undertaken, followed by repointing works to reinforce the outer walls with mortar. During these works, further damage and voids were detected in the spillway area, which were also repaired to ensure structural integrity.
With the embankment now stabilised, future improvement works to the closed walkway can proceed safely. Detailed designs are currently being developed to enhance the surfacing of the historic sand tramway, with the aim of reopening the walkway to the public by the summer holidays of 2025. These plans are presently awaiting planning approval, including listed building consent. Once approval is granted, further details regarding the project and its timeline will be shared with the public.
Bude-Stratton Town Council will continue to keep the community informed as updates become available.
