Repairs to Bude Canal Embankment Starting December 2024
Work to repair and stabilise the canal embankment at Summerleaze Beach is set to begin on 9th December 2024, with completion expected by May 2025. These essential works, carried out by Cornwall Council and Cormac, will address long-standing issues with the canal’s outer wall, ensuring its strength and resilience for the future. Access along the canal path will be maintained throughout the works wherever possible.

Following questions from the community, we’ve received additional details about the planned repair works on the Bude Canal embankment at Summerleaze Beach.
The project, led by Cornwall Council and Cormac, will be completed in three phases:
Phase1: Grouting Works
- Start Date: Monday 9th December 2024
- Duration: Approximately 2 weeks (ending 20th December 2024)
- This phase involves injecting specialist grout into the canal wall to stabilise it and stop leaks.
Phase 2: Vegetation Clearance and Seawall Repointing
- Start Date: Monday 6th January 2025
- Duration: Approximately 10 weeks (ending 14th March 2025)
- Vegetation will be cleared and the seawall will be repointed to improve its stability
Phase 3: Sand Rails Surface and Embankment Restoration
- Timeline: Planned to run concurrently with Phase 2
- This phase includes rebuilding the wall beside the sand rail, restoring the surface and improving safety and accessibility for walkers
Access During Works
- The canal-side path will remain open, with reduced width in some areas to allow the public to walk through safely
- The Sand Rail (River Neet side) will be completely closed, with some restricted beach access anticipated at the far end
- All plant and equipment will be cleared before the Christmas break and no restrictions will be in place during the holiday period
