Hundreds of people joined the 1950s-themed celebrations at The Castle in Bude on the first day of the long bank holiday weekend.
The free event – Petticoats & Rockabillies – was organised by Bude-Stratton Town Council’s events team at The Castle, to recognise the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. People began arriving with their picnics well before the start time of 11am to grab a spot on the Castle lawn, and to soak up the atmosphere.
There was live music all day with Bude Barrel Rockers on the Bandstand, Betty Bluebird and Bude Metric Brass. Rockabilly bands – The Flat Caps and Play It Cool – absolutely rocked the Castle grounds in the afternoon and had Bude Jive Club up on its feet as the party got into full swing.
For the children, Rob from Entertainingly Different was a huge hit with his storytelling and fun and games, there was a queue for face painting by Claire all day, and Adrian Ward entertained with his magic skills. 3rd Bude Rowan Scout Group ran a games area, and there were stalls to browse and Raymonds Circus to enjoy. The Castle team also laid on a crown colouring in activity for the kids, and encouraged the community to jot down happy Jubilee thoughts for the Memory Bunting display.
BSTC Events Officer, Luna Redhead, said: “It was lovely to see so many happy faces and people having such fun throughout the day. We have had incredibly positive feedback from the community, and we’d just like to thank everyone who came for enjoying the party spirit and for leaving the Castle grounds so spotless and litter-free when it was time to go home. We can’t wait for the next BSTC event at the Castle, which is Heritage Day on Sunday, 17th July. See you there!”
