Bude-Stratton Town Council is saddened to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip on Friday 9th April, and sends its sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and The Royal Family at this difficult time.
We are encouraging anyone within our community who wishes to leave their condolences to do so online, this can either be by emailing them directly to lieutenancy@cornwall.gov.uk which will be added to Cornwall’s book of condolences or directly at https://www.royal.uk. Regrettably, during the current public health situation, books of condolence will not be available for the public to sign.
Should you wish to make a tribute, The Royal Family have requested that instead of floral tributes members of the public may wish to consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, or one of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Patronages in memory of His Royal Highness, instead of leaving floral tributes.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Funeral will take place on Saturday 17 April 2021 at 3pm in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. The Funeral Service will begin with a National Minute’s Silence at three o’clock.
The Queen has approved the Prime Minister’s recommendation that there will be a period of National Mourning beginning on Friday 9 April until Saturday 17 April, the day of the Funeral inclusive.
Union flags on Shoulder Hill, Summerleaze Downs, The Castle grounds and outside the Parkhouse Centre, home to Bude-Stratton Town Council offices will remain at half-mast for the duration of National Mourning. The Castle is also being lit with purple lighting for the period of National Mourning.

I was deeply sorry to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh.
A quiet man who gave his life to service, supporting Her Majesty the Queen and our country with a generosity of spirit which generated great affection.
His sense humour went before him and I am reminded of the time he came to Bude for the 40th Anniversary of the Surf Life Saving Association in 1995. He was at the Falcon Hotel being served with coffee by Tim Browning who said “ How would you like you coffee sir” his reply was “ Preferably in a cup”. Afterwards, the Royal party went to the Parkhouse to meet the ‘Nippers’ from the Bude SLS club and then had lunch where Prince Philip asked if he could have a “Light Ale”. A waitress was sent over to the Brendon Hotel to retrieve a bottle. In his speech afterwards he commented on the fact that Bude relied on tourism for a lot of its income and then said “I’m surprised anybody can find the place”. The Duke was greatly impressed by the warm welcome he received by the people of Bude and is fondly remembered by those who had the privilege and pleasure to meet him. Rest in Peace.
