Speak Cornish Week: 22nd – 30th June

June 22nd – 30th marks Speak Cornish Week, organised by An Rosweyth, the network of Cornish language voluntary organisations. This is one of the biggest events in the Cornish language calendar, open to everyone from complete beginners to fluent speakers. The aim is to encourage everyone to use some Cornish and to make the language heard online and in towns, villages, shops, and pubs across Cornwall.

Throughout the week, there will be a variety of events, both online and in person, offering opportunities to learn and speak Cornish. The full programme of events is available on the Speak Cornish Week website http://www.speakcornish.com.

This year’s theme is ‘A warm Cornish welcome’. Below are some Cornish phrases to try out:

  • Dydh da – Hello
  • Lowena dhis – Joy to you
  • Wolkom os – You are welcome
  • Fatla genes? – How are you?
  • Da lowr? – OK?
  • Myttin da – Good Morning
  • Dohajydh da – Good Afternoon
  • Gorthugher da – Good Evening
  • Dynnargh dhe…… – Welcome to…
  • Deus a-ji – Come in
  • Da yw dha weles – Good to see you
  • Yew sos – Hi mate
