Stories of Love and History from Storm Tower's Stones

During the dismantling of the Storm Tower, we have discovered that the stones have their own stories to tell of visitors who have left their mark over the years. While some may consider these engravings as graffiti, there is a beautiful story behind at least one such carving.

Among the stones, we found a heart shaped engraving featuring the names ‘Len’ and ‘Pat’ with ‘Upton’ beneath it. The mystery of who these individuals were and why their names were etched on the stone intrigued us. As it turns out, Len and Pat were residents of Upon who first met when Pat was just 16. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage until Len’s recent passing. The engraving of their names into the stone took place approximately 55 years ago, around 1968.

With great care, we removed the stone bearing their names, and it was a touching moment when one of the contractors was able to present it to Pat. This precious artefact holds deep and cherished memories for her, and we felt privileged to be part of this special gesture.

We need your help!

Len and Pat’s stone was not the only one we were able to preserve and save during the dismantling. We have three others with engravings, each carrying its own untold narrative. We are eager to trace the origins of these stones and to connect them with the people and stories they represent. If you recognise or know anything about the stones pictured below, we’d love you to get in touch with us. Our hope is to reunite these stones with the people whose names are featured. If, however, we cannot link them to their respective owners, we will ensure they find a meaningful spot in the exhibition at the end of this project.
