Summary of Full Council Meeting – 3 April 2025

Bude-Stratton Town Council held its Full Council meeting on 3 April 2025 — the final meeting of the current Council ahead of local elections on 1 May 2025. Important updates and discussions took place on a range of local matters. Below is a summary of the meeting’s highlights.

Mayor’s Report
The Mayor reported on the recent visit to Bude by the High Sheriff of Cornwall, where over 30 community groups were engaged throughout the day and evening. He also attended the reopening of the refurbished Cornish Bakery. The Mayor shared a personal message on disability and his own journey, and as he will not stand for election again, he expressed his thanks to Council members, the Clerk, Deputy Clerk, and BSTC staff for their support during his time on the Council.

Cornwall Councillor’s Report
Cornwall Councillor La Broy informed members of the recent passing of John Gimson, a committed member of BCCT, and paid tribute to his work for the community. He also thanked BSTC members and staff for their service. Updates were provided on several local matters, including signage at Holnicote Road, pedestrian crossings in Bude, a planning pre-application for a McDonald’s in the area, progress on the new recycling system, second homes, Surf School parking fees, Hollabury allotments, the No.12 bus service, and repairs to the canal embankment. He confirmed the planning appeal for the proposed retirement home at An Mor had taken place and the outcome was awaited. Cllr La Broy took questions from members.

Updates from Lead Councillors

  • Cllr Aulsberry-Vockins reported on the Young People’s Working Group, which is exploring the possibility of becoming a steering group. A showcase event for young people is planned for 31 May at the Parkhouse Centre.
  • Cllr Herbert-Coulson confirmed that plans for the VE Day anniversary events are ongoing. Discussions had also taken place with the High Sheriff regarding housing, and a meeting is scheduled with Cornwall Council officers to discuss empty social housing in the area.
  • Cllr Corrigan-Turner gave an update from the recent CAP meeting, also attended by the local Police sector inspector.
  • Cllr O’Sullivan thanked those who supported the An Mor planning appeal enquiry.
  • Cllr Colwill expressed his thanks to the Facilities team and office staff for their continued support of committee work.

Minutes
The minutes of the Full Council meeting held on 5 March 2025 were approved. Committee meeting minutes for Planning (5, 17, 19 March), Facilities & Environmental Services (13 March), and Corporate & Democratic Services (20 March) were noted.

A recommendation was approved for BSTC to continue running the public conveniences at Summerleaze Beach, Crooklets Beach, and the TIC building for the 2025/26 financial year. Officers will investigate the potential transfer of freehold ownership from Cornwall Council, including a possible car park levy.

Stamford Hill Land Management Plan
Council approved the Stamford Hill Land Management Plan and thanked Cllr Browning for his work on both this and the Summerleaze Down Plan.

Bay Tree Gardens, Stratton
It was agreed that BSTC would explore the potential for devolved ownership of Bay Tree Gardens, Stratton.

Dog Wash Express Licence
Council approved the signing of a licence for Dog Wash Express.

Finance Reports
Council noted the payments made between 20 March and 3 April and approved the payments scheduled for 4 April 2025.

Correspondence
There was no correspondence to report. The Clerk offered thanks to councillors for their work over the last four years and for the support shown to her personally. Cllr O’Sullivan requested a “Meet the Councillor” session to be held on 3 May – a response will be confirmed in due course.
