Bude-Stratton Town Council was approached by the Pearl Exchange earlier this year with plans to for a temporary creative hub based in Bude. The Pearl Exchange will build connections and facilitate mentorships with inspirational figures in the arts and creative worlds, both locally and nationally. Through a series of creative and practical workshops and drop-in sessions, participants will gain vital employability skills, aspirations, self- esteem and resilience. The Pearl Exchange will be open and accessible to the whole community but with a focus on the 18-30 age bracket.
Councillors received a proposal from the Pearl Exchange at the Full Council meeting on the 4th June 2020 and having debated the impacts and recognising the benefits, resolved to support it.
The Covid pandemic has placed additional pressure on our predominately seasonal economy and employment prospects for young people in the area. Bude-Stratton Town Council believe the opportunity the Pearl Exchange offers is a welcomed and much needed addition to our Town especially as we look for new ways to adapt and grow in response to the new pressures.
The Bude Pitch & Putt site is ordinarily closed out of season and an unused asset which can now be put to good use.
There will be an initial one week trial in October 2020 and an eight week programme running from mid-February to mid-April 2021. As well as the use of the current permanent building, small temporary structures will be placed alongside the building to house creative programmes during the actual one and eight week event stages only.
The Town Council is now working with the Pearl Exchange to finalise the details of the short term letting and look forward to seeing the project progress.
