Beware of Cold Callers

Bude-Stratton residents are being advised to be cautious after reports of cold callers offering guttering and roofing services in Devon & Cornwall.

If you are considering work at home or in your garden, please follow this guidance:

Do not:

• Agree to work offered by unsolicited doorstep callers.
• Rely solely on social media posts or recommendations.
• Pay cash, transfer money immediately, or be rushed into decisions.

Do:

• Obtain three written quotes from reputable businesses.
• Check references and research companies online.
• Ask friends or family for recommendations or use Buy With Confidence.
• Verify professional qualifications, insurance, and licences.
• Keep full contact details, not just a mobile number.
• Check if you have a 14-day cooling-off period.

If you are unsure about a caller, do not open the door. If someone appears suspicious or a crime is in progress, contact the police on 999. For concerns about rogue traders, report to Trading Standards or call 101, noting any vehicle or personal descriptions.

Residents are encouraged to share this information with neighbours and display it on community notice boards where possible.
